What is this FAQ about?
Welcome to our FAQ section on LADS OPC UA! Here, we answer the most important questions for manufacturers, laboratories, end users, and developers. You’ll learn what LADS OPC UA is, how it benefits daily lab operations, how it helps meet regulatory requirements, and how to integrate it into existing systems. You’ll also find valuable information about resources, support offerings, and community activities.
LADS OPC UA is an open standard for communication and data exchange between laboratory devices. It’s built on OPC UA (Open Platform Communications Unified Architecture) and provides specialized models and interfaces so that different manufacturers and systems can efficiently interact with each other. This enables the seamless transfer of measurement data and information within a single lab or across multiple locations.
In many laboratories, devices from different manufacturers often rely on proprietary interfaces, making smooth integration difficult. LADS OPC UA addresses this issue by offering a unified standard:
Manufacturers benefit from easier integration of their devices into existing lab systems, which increases market acceptance.
Laboratories gain a cross-manufacturer solution that simplifies data exchange between various devices, reduces error potential, and streamlines processes.
End users enjoy a clear, standardized data foundation that makes daily work simpler while meeting the highest standards for security and traceability, plus the ability to control multiple devices through a single platform.
LADS OPC UA defines an “information model” describing exactly how laboratory devices communicate with one another. It is implemented as software libraries and tools that provide OPC UA functionality. Developers can integrate these libraries into device firmware or lab software to offer standardized communication interfaces.
Laboratory applications are subject to increasingly strict legal regulations (e.g., NIS-2, EU-GMP, FDA 21 CFR Part 11). LADS OPC UA supports compliance in several ways:
Suppose a pharmaceutical lab must prove that all analytical data is tamper-proof at all times. With LADS OPC UA, devices (e.g., HPLCs, spectrometers) can send data in real time to a central lab management system. The data is encrypted during transmission and automatically versioned. This makes it clear at any time which device performed a measurement, when it occurred, which parameters were set, and whether any changes were made—an essential basis for compliance audits or certifications.
Essentially anywhere laboratory devices need to communicate and exchange data. Typical use cases include research and development labs, quality assurance in manufacturing, medical laboratories, and government labs. LADS OPC UA shines wherever multiple devices from different manufacturers need to be networked efficiently.
The integration effort depends heavily on the existing IT infrastructure and the devices used. With modern devices that already support OPC UA, integration is often straightforward. Older devices may require adapters. In general, it is worth proceeding step by step and first taking inventory of all devices and software solutions.
Yes – twice a year, a so-called hackathon takes place at different locations in Germany. The aim of this two-day event series is to familiarize device manufacturers, software providers, and system integrators with the basic functions of LADS OPC UA in a practical way. Multiple participation is possible, but the number of places is limited. In addition, we offer online and classroom training courses on OPC UA in cooperation with the VDMA if there is sufficient demand.
