About LADS

A new standard for the smart laboratory

LADS OPC UA is the new laboratory device standard, replacing analog paperwork and proprietary interface projects. LADS (Laboratory Analytical Device Standard) is an extension—known as a Companion Specification—of the OPC UA standard, developed specifically for laboratory requirements. It enables the seamless connectivity of lab devices with modern software systems, laying the foundation for Laboratory 4.0. By leveraging the well-established OPC UA infrastructure and adding lab-specific functions, LADS improves interoperability across different manufacturers and device types.

  • It opens up a world in which devices from different manufacturers can work in a “plug-and-play” manner, regulatory requirements are met with ease, and IT security is built in by default.
  • It’s a significant step toward the digital transformation of the laboratory and enables better integration with other areas such as Pharma 4.0, robotics, and AI applications.

Many processes are currently tedious and costly. Today’s lab needs a clear, future-proof path to meet growing challenges.

Interfaces in the Laboratory of the Future

Interfaces are the cornerstone of Laboratory 4.0. However, only the development of uniform interface standards like LADS OPC UA truly promotes interoperability and boosts efficiency in daily lab operations.

Interfaces enable communication between different laboratory devices, systems, and processes. They form the basis for data exchange and the integration of all components in the laboratory.

Standardized interfaces allow devices to exchange data and samples, minimizing manual interventions. This leads to automated lab processes and greater efficiency.

Interfaces enable the seamless integration of laboratory data into central management systems such as LIMS (laboratory information management systems). This allows for uniform data management and analysis.

Interfaces enable communication between the laboratory and external systems, such as production. This allows approvals to be requested automatically and processes to be controlled accordingly.

Modular interfaces allow laboratory workstations to be flexibly adapted to different workflows.

The three target groups –
your specific advantages

For lab operators

  • Cost reduction & efficiency: Save time with every new device integration and reduce long-term maintenance costs.
  • Legal certainty & future-proofing: Comply with the latest regulations before they become a problem.
  • Higher data quality: Minimize errors, improve your processes, and deliver reliable, verifiable results.

For device manufacturers

  • Easy market access: A uniform, manufacturer-independent interface means fewer custom developments and more satisfied customers.
  • Lower maintenance costs: Standardized connection once, instead of repeatedly tinkering with individual solutions.
  • Respond faster to changes: Upgrades, updates, and new regulations are easier to implement.

For IT system integrators

  • Uniform basis for innovation: Use your time to further develop your LIMS features instead of dealing with annoying individual connections.
  • Growing range of services: Standardized interfaces mean more projects that can be implemented more efficiently and a growing network of satisfied customers.
